Foreword Hei'ichi SUGIYAMA President of the Kansai Poet's Association The kansai Poet's Association is a group of poets living in Osaka,Kyoto,Kobe and the surrounding districts of western Japan. A poet is primarily one who is proud of standing alone on the strength of his or her own particular character, and dislikesfactions. And yet self-complacency can be fatal to the writer who isolates himself. Mutual interaction and stimulation, on the otherhand, often lead to development and improvement. As the Chineseproverb goes, "harmony is not conformity". It seems important, then, for the writer to achieve a kind of harmony, without losing his or her own personal outlook on life. As a group, we adhere to no paticular ideology. Rather, weowe our existence to the coming together of a variety of individualtalents. This anthology has been produced on this occasion in thehope of encourageing exchange and understanding, not simply withinJapan itself, but with people abroad. We sincerely hope, therefore, that our poetry reaches thehearts of as many readers as possibele, in as many unknown lands aspossibele. |

The Promise A crow pulled a tuft of white fur from the slumbering deer's rump. Its eyelids quivered and its big eyes opened. Held like dandelion floss in the crow's beak, the tuft of hair wafts in the air. Hearing the buzz of a horsefly, ti twists its neck round to chase it off, but sucked by the horsefly, the deer's blood vanishes into the air. In spring it eats cherry brossom, In early summer, cherry leaves. Refrected in its soft eyes I see myself, as if it is saying, "How long will Tannhauser continue the struggle between soul and body in Wagner's opera?" The buzz of the horsefly - let that be. Growing smaller and smaller in the deer's eyes, I would walk deeper and deeper into the dakening forest ..... Love me and put fresh young twigs upon my head, too. |

A strange creature He's a strange creature - when struck with a club, his crumpling cartilage caves in with a squelch; as the club drives deeper and deeper, it reaches the floorboads with a thud. He lies there a while as if dead, but then begins his slimy progress once more. I take my foot to him, and twist him into the ground; and cringe as I squash him flat - for a time he hugs the floor, but then, unnoticed, he swells again with regained thickness, his edges shrunken and rounded out. He sits there, white and smooth. What can I do? I look on with sour face - a strange creature, indeed. |

Spiral Winter's dusk falls fast not long after three the hooded gulls begin their restless bobbing then one by one take to the air their white eddy growing ever wider swaying, swelling - high and thick neither touching heaven nor sleeping on water just hovering there in mid-air an immense writhing spiral trembling all over a huge twisted soul that has lost its way a great white eddy haunting dusk's purga tory. |
