Wedding Procession for Fox Heita ANZU Round and round, lovely round, full tide and full moon, a fox is leading a wedding procession. Two bridal ears both pointed and wise, hidden deftly inside the bridal hood. Even the whiskers on the wily guests' cheeks, seem to reflct the moonlight'shadows. Round and round, lovely round, full tide and full moon, oh please hear my wish and grant it for me. Listen to the kindness I hide in my breast, oh Mr. Jizo sitting on the edge of the village. Hold me against your breast so broad, the great heads of rice, they rustle together, the golden colour of a fried beancurd cake. My legs may be fleshier than you expect, but I will close my eyes up tight, And you can make free of me for just tonight, our one and only nuptial night. Round and round, lovely round, full tide and full moon, please smile on me and forgive this one night, my dearest darling, dearest husband. *A 'jizo' is a guardian deity of children, and small statues of them can often be seen along roadsides, or dotted amoungst urban dwellings. leaf veins Norio KANAHORI a pot from the Yayoi period decorated with a leaf pattern spell kneaded into its clay and turned into a vessel then linked to your body bound by earth and water and light a body for burial even if destined to return to dust a thing once formed retains its potential to awaken again even after it has been smashed even from a single fragment the pattern circling your body cannot be wrenched away no matter what happens a single continuous line solidly unifies the pot from tip to toe a single continuous pattern is formed so that one knows the size of the base from a single fragment do not touch it do not take it away even now your are bound by the flesh you are now wearing The Towel Tatuo MURATA "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" - You are a child of Macbeth's witches. Large or small, thin or thick - You are a child of those witches. Yet you should always be clean - Whether hung from a rack, or stacked on a shelf. You should always be clean so that you can get dirty - Or No! You should be clean even after you are dirty. Even when wiping the table, or wiping the floor - Even when stained with dark blotches of sauce - You should be clean so you can cleanse Those lightly tainted things surrounding us both. Destined to wipe away unexpected blood that spurts from nostrils - At times used to dry the sweat in a nuptial bed - At times impregnated with the smell of cucumber - You should always be clean, as the white cloth over a newly dead face. The dirt is not really yours, I know - It lies in the hidden crannies of this impure world. Like that which is wrung out from a washing machine - It attaches itself to this event or that, this being or that, in or out of the world. Wettened so that you can dry - Stained so that you can be purified - "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" - Indeed, the incarnation of the witches' prediction. Soldiers of the Future Masumi NAGAI In the past, I heard that conscripts were checked for piles and hernia when being drafted, as well as for sexual diseases, of course. Conditions not normally considered serious in times of peace developed into health defects that might cause a through tundra or the mobilization of heavy armaments. Nowadays, no such barbarian army exists. The outdated term 'war' remains to describe the grasping and freeing of levers and other mechanical operations by which we now generally kill one another. And yet, most frightening of all about this soldier and intelligence business is the abandoned wreckage of depleted uranium used at the end of the twentieth century. These days, sperm is extracted from soldiers bound for the front. Officers admonish their men with, "It's not your decision whether or not you want a baby. This sperm, from healthy, patriotic men like you, full of courage, full of love for your country - this is the future of our land. Do you think there is any your equal to carry on that banner?" which might sound like high idealism in some ears, or black humor in others. Either way, the sperm waits quietly on the shelves of hospital deep freezes until called for. And these officers discipline all dutiful soldiers to obey army regulations regarding their wives, telling them, "And do not ejaculate with the one you love." Even so - one million eight thousand times the two thousand five hundred years that have passed since the start of monotheism, the birth of Christ, and year one of the western that is the half-line of this depleted uranium? A Cluster of Grapes Yuji SAKO Over billions of light years from far over time and space rolling on and on lots of sweet and sour purple orbs dropped here and there from their vine delighting the rich soil that received them and gave them life, as if light were being born. Then another cluster dropped here and there like countless cans of juice painted green, white, yellow children with light in their eyes pick them up to play and they burst into a million jagged fragments that pierce, wrench, dig into eyes, arms, guts innumerable drops of blood dripping into the sad, heavy earth. But look! turn your eyes and see the sad soil embracing our torn future anger, grief burning onwards into what is destined to be. Calling Kazumi TSUJISHITA Opening the lattice window, the banksia roses had started to bloom; at the tip of a twig, a misty spring moon. Since that night, my lovely cat has disappeared. Pestered by her jade eyes, I let her free in the moon garden; she sat alone on the step, ears pricked up, listening to something I could not hear. Then, as always, she turned the corner of the backyard, and her tail slipped out of sight. On moonlit nights, anything precious should be shut safely away; for the light of the moon stirs an inner stirring, not just within human beings. I call from the night doorway, and it flows beyond the wind-caressed grass, from end to end of the long brick wall; in a dream of lifting her up again into my arms, a small shadow dropping onto the stone step: and sticking softly to my shoulder, the smoky moon appeared. Walking Koichi YAKUSHIGAWA Walking silently, Head slightly down, At a spot two meters ahead. Walking silently. Only walking Has meaning. So I am walking To get somewhere. Why do I walk? Only to go back To days passed. Not to make progress, Just to return I walk in silence. The sun warm at my back; The radio said the afternoon would cloud over. Two crows picking At a paper bag. Getting nearer, It is an injured dove. Two crows Violating A hurt dove- Two thugs in black. I squint, And walk silently past. |
