薬師川 虹一
リジヤ・シムクーテさんは1942年、リトアニアの小さな村サモギチアに生まれました。第二次大戦中に両親とともにリトアニアを脱出して子供時代をドイツの難民キャンプで過ごしたのです。1949年に彼女はオーストラリアにたどり着きました。でもリトアニアの言葉を必死に守り育てるためにシカゴにあるリトアニア言語研究所やリトアニアのビルニウス大学(Vilnius Univ.)で言語、文学、伝承物語、などを学びました。現在は、リトアニアの首都ヴィルニウスと南オーストラリアのアデリードとで交互に暮らしているようです。でも、リトアニアの風土に強い愛着を持っているように見えます。
私は彼女の詩に日本の俳句的な感性を感じますし、また極めて仏教的な世界観を感じるのです。リトアニアの文芸誌『文学と芸術』で、ある批評家が、彼女の詩を『曼荼羅』と呼び、またある批評家は『禅の精神がある』といっています。当を得た言葉だと思います。
ここに幾つかの彼女の詩を紹介しましょう。表題が詩の中に入り込んでいる手法は、私も時々使うものですが、彼女はここでそれを全てに用いています。
青い毛糸 が彼女の手の中で もつれている 彼女はその糸の 端まで手繰り 彼女の両手は 砂の仲に埋まった 目は雲の中に入り 髪の毛は砂丘の草となって伸びる 珊瑚の唇で 青い砂に触れる そして指は 空の中に消える |
