Attila Jozsef

A Drunk Man on the Rail
         Attila Jozsef(1905-37)

A drunk man lies along the rail, out flat,
His left hand curls tightly round the flask,
He sleeps and snores, bathes in the early light.
On the road, the vanishing heels of the night.

The cool night-wind has diffidently adorned
His scattered hair with twists of grass and cinders,
A rainbow dew has splashed him like the dawn.
His linely body shudders, lies quiet, shudders.

His right arm follows the hard sleeper,
They both seem to clutch a other’s breast.
What he is now, his youth and rags make him.

The sky’s frame glows faintly; the sun appearing
Sees a drunk body; the rail, quickly possessed
By a trembling which rumbles and grows, begins to shake him.

              John F. Deane

Gift
John F. Deane

And did you catch it then? That offered flash
of brilliance across the gloom? There by the curve
of the river, by the salleys and ash-trees, a brash
iridescence of emera;d and blue―
kingfhishe! Skulking you were, and sulking, astray
from sacrament and host, with your dreary
dwelling on the ego. Pathetic. Pray
grace in that sacred presenteation, the high
shock of what is beautiful leading you to betray
this self-infusion for a while. And then that cry―
its piping chee-chee-chee, secretive by the stream’s drift
and you step closer, cautiously, grace being still
easily squandered, till you have it before you: the gift!
Loveliness, and a dagger-like poised bill.
